Mewtwo has been in Pokémon GO since 2017. It has been in Legendary Raids, Research Breakthroughs, and Shadow form. The one thing it never had was a Mega Evolution — until now. Starting at Pokémon GO Fest 2026, Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y will make their Pokémon GO debut through a brand-new raid format called Super Mega Raids. Here is everything you need to know before the event opens, including which form to prioritize, what the Super Mega Raid mechanic actually demands from your roster, and when players who cannot attend in-person can get in on the action.

What Are Super Mega Raids?
Super Mega Raids are a new raid tier above standard Mega Raids, introduced specifically for Mega Mewtwo. They are harder than any raid format previously available in Pokémon GO, and they come with a structural requirement: every trainer in the lobby must have a Mega-Evolved Pokémon in their team. If you walk in without a Mega on your roster, you cannot contribute to shield-breaking.
Mega Mewtwo starts with 10 shields. Standard Charged Attacks do nothing to these shields — only Charged Attacks from Mega-Evolved Pokémon break them. This means bringing your highest-DPS non-Mega attacker and ignoring the mechanic is not an option. You need a Mega Pokémon active, and that Mega needs to land Charged Attacks to move the fight forward.
The minimum lobby size Niantic recommends is 10 trainers, all with active Megas. In practice, 15–20 is safer for players whose Mega Pokémon are not at the highest Mega Level. This is a genuine coordination event, not a duo or small-group challenge.
Mega Mewtwo X vs. Mega Mewtwo Y: What's the Difference?
Both forms start as the same Mewtwo you already have. What separates them is typing, stat distribution, and the Mega Energy required to unlock each form independently.
Mega Mewtwo Y
- Type: Psychic
- Max CP at Level 50: 7,267
- Primary strength: Exceptional Special Attack — highest Psychic-type damage output in the game at launch
- Weaknesses: Bug, Ghost, Dark
- GO Fest Global move bonus: Mewtwo caught from Mega Mewtwo Y raids will know the Charged Attack Psystrike
Mega Mewtwo Y is the pure attacker. It has the highest CP ceiling of any Psychic-type in GO and will sit at the top of Psychic raid DPS charts for the foreseeable future. If you run Psychic-type attackers in your raid rotation, this is the form you want first.
Mega Mewtwo X
- Type: Psychic / Fighting
- Max CP at Level 50: 6,910
- Primary strength: Physical bulk plus Fighting-type damage — a strong pick for raids where Fighting coverage matters
- Weaknesses: Flying, Fairy, Ghost, Psychic
- GO Fest Global move bonus: Mewtwo caught from Mega Mewtwo X raids will know the Fast Attack Counter
Mega Mewtwo X is the Fighting-specialist form. It does not match Y's raw Psychic output, but it is the strongest Fighting-type Mega attacker available. If you frequently raid against Normal, Dark, Ice, Rock, or Steel types that Fighting hits super-effectively, X gives you more coverage than any other Mega in that type slot.
Which Form Should You Target First?
For most players, Mega Mewtwo Y first. Pure Psychic coverage applies in more raid scenarios, and its CP ceiling is higher. Get Y, get Psystrike on the caught Mewtwo during Global, then circle back to X if you want Fighting coverage. The Mega Level systems are now tracked independently for X and Y — similar to how Mega Charizard X and Y work — so progressing one does not carry over to the other.
Best Counters for Each Form
Counters for Mega Mewtwo Y (Psychic)
Target its Bug, Ghost, and Dark weaknesses. Top performers:
- Necrozma (Dawn Wings) — Ghost/Psychic, exceptional Ghost damage output
- Mega Tyranitar — Dark, strong sustained DPS and naturally fills the Mega requirement
- Shadow Tyranitar — Dark, highest non-Mega Dark DPS in the game
- Mega Gengar — Ghost/Poison, fast Charged Attacks, good for shield breaking
- Shadow Hydreigon — Dark/Dragon, solid coverage
- Mega Absol — Dark, reliable if Tyranitar is not available
Counters for Mega Mewtwo X (Psychic/Fighting)
Target its Flying, Fairy, Ghost, and Psychic weaknesses. Flying hits both its types, making it the most efficient damage type:
- Mega Rayquaza — Dragon/Flying, the strongest Flying attacker in the game by a significant margin
- Shadow Moltres — Fire/Flying, excellent Flying damage output
- Mega Pidgeot — Normal/Flying, accessible option that fills the Mega requirement
- Togekiss — Fairy/Flying, dual weakness coverage
- Mega Gardevoir — Psychic/Fairy, Fairy hits the Fighting typing
For either form, your Mega slot should ideally be one of the top counters listed — that way it contributes to both shield breaking and damage simultaneously.
When Can You Actually Fight Mega Mewtwo?
There are three windows depending on whether you can attend in person:
- GO Fest Tokyo — May 29 through June 1, 2026. In-person ticket holders get Timed Research that awards a Mewtwo with first Mega Level unlocked, plus a Super Mega Raid at the end of the Park Session.
- GO Fest Chicago — June 4–7, 2026. Same structure as Tokyo.
- GO Fest Copenhagen — June 11–14, 2026. Same structure.
- GO Fest 2026: Global — July 11–12, 2026, free for all trainers worldwide. Super Mega Raids will be available during event hours (10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. local time each day). This is the window the majority of the player base will use.
The Global event is free this year — no ticket purchase required. Niantic confirmed this is part of the 10th anniversary celebration. Every Mega Mewtwo caught from Super Mega Raids during the Global event will have at least one Mega Level already unlocked, which eliminates the initial energy barrier to Mega Evolving it for the first time.
Preparing Your Roster Before July
You have roughly six weeks between now and the Global event. That is enough time to meaningfully upgrade your counter lineup if you act now:
- Mega Tyranitar or Mega Gengar: Run them in as many Mega Raids as possible to push their Mega Level up. Higher Mega Level means more bonus damage during Super Mega Raids.
- Mega Rayquaza: If you have one and plan to fight Mega Mewtwo X, prioritize getting it to Mega Level 3 before July.
- Candy your Mewtwo: Shadow Mewtwo and standard Mewtwo both hit harder at higher levels. Use the weeks before Global to walk them and stack Mewtwo Candy XL if you want to push to Level 50.
- Build a raid group: Super Mega Raids are not soloable or small-group content. Find a local raid group or coordinate in GO's Discord communities before July so you're not scrambling for lobby partners on the day.
The New Mega Level Split: What Changes for Everyone
Mega Mewtwo's arrival comes with a system change that affects every trainer who has previously Mega Evolved Charizard. Starting with the Mega Mewtwo update, Mega Level progression is tracked independently for each Mega form. Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y will have separate Mega Energy pools going forward — but as a one-time migration, any Charizard that has already been Mega Evolved will have its current Mega Level applied to both Charizard X and Y. Free double credit, one time only.
For Mewtwo, this means the X and Y Mega Levels are always independent. Progressing one form's energy and level does not help the other. Budget your Mega Mewtwo Energy accordingly.
Does Genning Help With Any of This?
Pokémon GO operates entirely separately from the Switch games, so there is no direct connection between your GO Mewtwo and genned Mewtwo in Scarlet/Violet or Legends: Z-A. What genning does help with is your mainline collection — if you want a competition-ready Mewtwo in Scarlet/Violet with max IVs, the right nature, and a legal moveset, you can get one through the PokéCreator tool without grinding Dynamax Adventures or waiting for a HOME transfer. Mewtwo distributions have historically been event-locked and region-specific — the mystery gift archive has every past event Mewtwo on record if you want to see what's been available.
For GO specifically, the grind is the point — catching your own Mega Mewtwo from a Super Mega Raid, with its GO Fest background and the Counter or Psystrike move attached, is the whole experience. No shortcut replaces that.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a ticket to fight Mega Mewtwo in GO Fest 2026?
No. GO Fest 2026: Global on July 11–12 is free for all trainers. In-person events in Tokyo, Chicago, and Copenhagen require tickets, but the Global event has no cost this year as part of the 10th anniversary celebration.
What is a Super Mega Raid and how is it different from a regular Mega Raid?
Super Mega Raids are a new tier above standard Mega Raids. They require all trainers in the lobby to have a Mega-Evolved Pokémon. Mega Mewtwo starts with 10 shields that can only be broken by Charged Attacks from Mega-Evolved Pokémon. You need a large coordinated group — minimum 10 trainers, practically closer to 15–20.
Should I get Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y first?
Mega Mewtwo Y first for most players. Its pure Psychic typing and higher CP ceiling (7,267 vs. 6,910) make it the stronger generalist attacker. Target Mega Mewtwo X afterward if you want dedicated Fighting-type coverage.
Do Mega Mewtwo X and Y share Mega Energy?
No. With the new split Mega Level system, X and Y have separate energy pools and separate Mega Level progression. Energy earned from Mega Mewtwo X raids applies only to Mega Mewtwo X, and the same for Y.
What moves should I look for on a caught Mewtwo from GO Fest Global?
Mewtwo caught from Mega Mewtwo X Super Mega Raids will know the Fast Attack Counter. Mewtwo caught from Mega Mewtwo Y Super Mega Raids will know the Charged Attack Psystrike. Psystrike is historically Mewtwo's best Charged Attack for Psychic-type damage, so if you can only do one form's raids, Y gives you the better moveset bonus.
